Business Manager's Report

The work has slowed considerably since the Seabrook shutdown. I am anticipating a slow winter as well. If you are out of work and planning on traveling to another local to work please make sure you contact us before you go. You will want to make sure you have all your credentials that you may need before you leave town. Each local may require different documentation such as good guy letters, apprentice completion certificates OSHA 10 certificates etc. If you haven’t already signed up on the Electronic Reciprocity Transfer System “ERTS” make sure you contact the benefits office so your benefits monies are sent home.
We have scheduled an emergency OSHA 10 class for those of you out of work whom need this important class for December 4th and 5th from 8:00am to 1:30pm here at the hall, since space is limited we must limit to members who plan on traveling and will need the certification to get referred. Please contact Jonathan   ASAP @ 226-3964 Other classes will be scheduled in the future.

Salting

"Salting" refers to paid union organizers who apply for jobs for the sole purpose of organizing nonunion workforces.

"Salting" is the deliberate act of getting a job at a specific workplace with the intent to organize a union.

SALTING IS A LAWFUL AND SUCCESSFUL ORGANIZING TOOL.
“Salting represents an essential method for Unions to communicate their message of fair wages and decent fringe benefits to unorganized workers. This organizing tactic has been upheld by the United States Supreme Court and the National Labor Relations Board. Under current federal law, Unions have no other meaningful access to these unrepresented workers. By contrast, anti-Union employers spend considerable amounts of time and money every year on persuading their employees that Union representation is somehow against their interest". When we're out there working with the nonunion we need to continue  communicating this message, not just with words but with action…

First Aid/CPR

 It’s been three weeks since I began my new job as training Director and so far I’ve found it to be as exciting as it is challenging. Levi has taken this program to a new level and I will do my best to keep us going in that same direction with the apprentice program and journeyman training.  Training dates for First Aid/CPR are on the following dates;

First Aid/CPR November 28th and 30th at 5:30 to 8:30

First Aid /CPR December 12th and 14th at 5:30 to 8:30

The dates for the High voltage splicing classes have not been confirmed with 3M, I hope to have them soon.
Those of you that would like to attend either of these classes or would like training in other areas please let me know and we can schedule another one in the near future.

Did You Know...?

Did You Know...?
The first time "490" was used for a Local Union Charter number was April 1, 1906 for Provo, Utah. This Local became defunct shortly after.

The next emergence of the great number "490" was in Dallas, Texas on April 10, 1913. That Local was amalgamated with Local 69, Dallas, Texas, on September 19, 1914, thus making the number 490 again available for the next Charter.

The number 490 lay dormant for the next 2 years before being issued to Centralia, Illinois on October 24, 1916.
December 9, 1931, Centralia, was amalgamated with Local 702, West Frankfort, Illinois.

Seven years and 12 days later, it was a cold Wednesday on December 21, 1938. Twelve men gathered into a room in Dover, NH to sign a document. This parchment was issued number "490" by then International President D.W. Tracy, becoming the present day charter that is hanging in our Hall today.

O'Conner Was Right!!!

This letter was sent to Fosters Daily Democrat by Joe Casey in response to an Editorial in the Fosters published on Monday, October 30, 2006

O’Conner was Right!!!

Paul O’Conner was right in the Metal Trade’s endorsement of Carol Shea Porter. Jeb Bradley throughout his tenure has religiously voted against working Americans. Here are just a few of his assaults on the working class.
Bradley voted against a real minimum wage increase. He voted for CAFTA, the illegitimate step child of NAFTA, a law that has devastated the manufacturing sector in this country since the early 1990s. Voted against pension protection for over 120,000 airline workers. Voted with Wal-Mart that the labor department must give them a 15 day notice before enacting any child labor law investigations. Voted with President Bush on privatizing Federal jobs (pay back to their corporate cronies). Voted with big business to weaken OSHA rules in the workplace. Voted for H.R. 4297, a law that gives a 40% tax cut to those earning over 1 million a year while the middle class received a benefit of about $7 annually.
This irresponsible record against working families goes on and on. When the PNSY was put on the chopping block Jeb Bradley did what he is suppose to do. This issue was a no brain, bi-partisan issue, for all who represent the seacoast.
O’Conner and the members of the metal trades did the right thing by supporting Carol Shea Porter. They are standing with their Brothers and Sisters throughout the state and throughout the country that support candidates who support them. These were the people without the name recognition who actually lost a days pay to stand with the workers of the PNSY (the sea of yellow shirts of support). O’Conner gets it! Once again the Fosters Daily Democrat Editor knows nothing of solidarity and nothing of unions.
